I have spent a lot of time researching the burial sites of troops in California.
There is very little documentation of this.
I physically traveled to many cemetaries in California to gather information,
and people have sent me other information.
I have made a volume of this information, and it's still an ongoing process.
For instance, I have found where troops are buried in Calif. from the Revolutionary
War, The War of 1812, The Mexican War, The Indian War, the Civil War-both Union
and Confederate troops, and the Spanish-American War. I have found a few rather
unusual things, like where one of Teddy Rosevelt's Rough Riders is buried near
Chico, CA, and Hiram Goode, an indian scout for the 2nd Ca Cav who was killed
by his indian step-son is buried in the Tehama Cemetary. It is rumored that
Hiram had 40 scalps.
After the war Union troops from other states came out to Calif and are buried here. I also have some data on Confederate troops that later died here in Calif.
Volume 18, section 1 lists where the Calif 100 (troops that served with the
2nd Mass Cav) were buried.
This one volume will contain all the information I have about gravesites from
the wars listed above both in and out of Calif.
I am the Graves Registration Officer for the Department of the Pacific and
California, which includes Alaska and Hawaii.
I am collecting data about troops buried in California, and about California
troops buried out of state. If you have information that you'd like to see in
my volume, contact me.
